Hopefully you’ve had a chance to peruse the information on sunscreen safety at Environmental Working Group. If so, you can see there are quite a number of sunscreens rated between 0 and 2, or “Low Hazard.”

The sunscreen best for you gets down to personal preference as to texture, smell, price, activity, SPF factor, and so forth. Almost all the information you need to select a safe sunscreen and have a pleasant experience with it can be found at the EWG website. It will only take a few minutes to do some vital research.

We’ll give you a sneak peek of the sunscreens rated Top 10 by EWG, but highly recommend that you download their short report that gives concise lists of information to help you protect your skin at a glance:

1. Badger SPF 30 (2007)

2. Keys Soap Solar RX Therapeutic Sunblock SPF 30(2005)

3. ColoreScience Sunforgettable Rock and Roller Ball SPF 30 (2006)

4. Lavera Sun Screen Neutral SPF 40 (2007)

5. Vanicream Sunscreen Sport SPF 35 (2006)

6. UV Natural Sport SPF 30+ (2007)

7. UV Natural Adult SPF 30+ (2007)

8. UV Natural UV Golf / Ultra (2007)

9. UV Natural Baby SPF 30+ (2007)

10. Peter Thomas Roth Titanium Dioxide Sunblock SPF 30 (2006)

One great feature at EWG is a comment function, where you can read posts from users and leave your own opinion. This is a great feature because some people don’t like the smell or feel of certain sunscreens and, while everyone’s sense of smell is different and opinions on the board vary widely, this can at least forewarn you.

EWG also lists whether the products are tested on animals.

In the last post, we mentioned the most toxic ingredients to look out for in sunscreen, or any other product that you absorb into your body for that matter.

Zinc and titanium will usually be found in the most effective, low hazard sunscreens. Below are some of the ingredients listed by the manufacturers of the natural sunscreens:

Badger SPF 30 lists:

Zinc Oxide 20.5% Other ingredients: Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Simmondsia Chinesis (jojoba) Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium dulcis (Orange) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Blood Orange) Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Seabuckthorn) CO2 Extract,Tanacetum Annuum (Blue Tansy) Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Oil

Solar RX contains:

Nano zinc oxide, shea butter, avocado oil, carrot seed oil, black cumin oil, essential oil blend, purified water, vegetable glycerin, vegetable was, rosemary

Wow, what a difference! You can see that natural botanicals are safer for you and the environment, while giving your skin protection from harmful UV rays. Many of these ingredients sound like food, which is what they are – food for your skin and body!

UV Natural  has an informative website, where they claim that UV Natural Sunscreens are formulated from the highest quality natural ingredients available. In addition they are Cruelty Free (not tested on animals), 100% Vegan (excluding the SFP 15, which contains beeswax), biodegradable and non-comedogenic. Biodegradability is a huge factor in protecting the environment.

As you can see, there are many online resources. It will take very little of your time to educate yourself enough to make wise choices for your skin safety and overall health.

So study the terms, read the labels, select a natural, safe sunscreen, then go forth and enjoy the rest of this bountiful summer knowing that you and your loved ones are protected!

It depends which oil you will use. the lower the nuembr, the more UV exposure, the more likely you will turn red and then tan. Remember tan is out and unhealthy May 26, 2013
